Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns
is an American contemporary artist who was born on the 15th of May.
He is mainly known for his works in painting and printmaking. Johns is part of
three movements. Abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada and Pop Art. His most notable
works are Flags, Numbers, Stenciled Words and Maps. He has won many awards
including the Grand Prize for his painting at Venice Biennial, artist of the
year (1988) and his National Medal of Arts in 1990. Since 1960 he has worked
with Universal Limited Art Editions, Inc in all different printmaking
techniques, investigating and developing existing compositions. Johns got the
hang of lithography almost straight away which enabled him to make printed
versions of flags, maps and targets that filled his paintings. My favourite
lithograph by Jasper Johns is Two Maps II, which was made in 1966. In my
opinion this is a great piece. It has such a complex look and although it has
quite a dull grey colour, I feel it is very eye catching and rather different
to other artists work.
